VoiceThread, PhotoStory, PowerPoint-which one?

Posted by Lois on June 5, 2011

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been watching the teachers in Level 2 at my school achieve a similar outcome in 3 different ways. They wanted to take a series of photos, one for each student and then record audio for the student’s information on each photo. Some teachers have used VoiceThread, some have used PhotoStory and others have used PowerPoint. Each method achieves the main goals of the activity – a class/individual slideshow with sound.
After considering what they have done I thought I’d list the advantages of each method so that teachers can make an informed decision when they are choosing which way to make their multimedia.

PhotoStory 1 – V.Easy Made for it 3-Final product has to uploaded to another site to get the embed code. Use Vimeo Good for whole grade or individual students with sound files.
PowerPoint 2 – Easy Easy for students to self manage but not as easy to transfer files – links break 100-Very difficult to embed with sound. Easy for individual students to create with sound files. Difficult to share.
VoiceThread 3 – Not as Easy Made for it! 1-Easy A little complicated to set up at the beginning but easy after that.
